The New York Red Bulls released the names of 10 players invited to the preseason training camp in Florida on January 28. The lucky individuals who now have the opportunity to train alongside Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill include super draft picks, an Ecuadorean international, and past and present academy players.
A relatively unknown name among that list of 10 is that of Sammy Adjei Junior. A forward from Newark, N.J., Adjei’s resume consists of playing for St. Benedict Prep, NYRB U-16 and -18 academy teams, U-18 US National Team, U-20 Ghanaian National Team and most recently, Iona College, according to information found on his Youtube channel and his profile on icgaels.com.
Like many of the other trialists, Adjei represents small odds at joining a strong core of forwards the Red Bulls have at their disposal. While he is more of an outside winger than a central striker, Petke illustrated in his rookie season that he prefers two-way, defensive wingers rather than dynamic, offensive and creative ones. As his many highlight videos show, Adjei is certainly the latter type. In addition, effectiveness at the college level does not necessarily translate to the pros. He possesses the chance to dispel that notion in Florida.
