FLASHBACK: NYRB Academy receive once-in-a-lifetime experience

Seriously, how cool is this? Apologies for the vagueness, but by this, I mean that. Can any lover of the “beautiful game” possibly imagine scrimmaging and playing five v. twos with the full Argentinian national team, let alone mere high school students? And did I mention that a certain mop-haired superstar, Lionel Messi, was participating in the practice?

These academy alumni, including recent Portland homegrown signing Bryan Galego (how did that happen again), are lucky. I would have paid to watch Argentina train. They got to play with them – for free. Hopefully the Red Bulls will not trade away the homegrown rights from our other highly rated players like Dan Metzger and Brandon Allen in the future. And then hopefully they will not be subsequently waived (Sacir Hot and Matt Kassel). Some more homegrown action at Red Bull Arena is required. Connor Lade is a start, but I want more!
